The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
