The Devastating Shift a Single Year Has Made in the US

In late October 2024, the landscape was entirely separate. Before the US presidential election, reflective residents could admit the country's significant faults – its unfairness and imbalance – yet they continued to perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A land where legal governance held significance. A state guided by a dignified and decent public servant, even with his older age and growing weakness.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the nation we reside in. People believed to be unauthorized foreigners are detained and forced into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. The president is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting legal authorities surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are dispatched to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The defense headquarters, renamed the War Department, has – in effect – liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends potentially totaling close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, law firms, media outlets are buckling from leader's menaces, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family.

“America, just months before its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and extremism,” an American historian, stated recently. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it transpired here.”

Each day begins to new horrors. It is hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – how deeply lost our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we know that the leader was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing previous administration and despite the alerts that came with the understanding of the conservative plan – following the leader directly stated openly he planned to be a dictator solely at the start – enough Americans chose him instead of the other candidate.

Frightening as the present situation may be, it’s even scarier to realize that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. How will another 36 months of this downfall leave us? And what if that period becomes a more extended duration, because there is not anyone to restrain this president from deciding that additional tenure is required, perhaps for security concerns?

Granted, all is not lost. We will have midterm elections in 2026 that could bring a different political equilibrium, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist government representatives who are attempting to apply certain responsibility, such as lawmakers who are starting a probe concerning the try to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in the next cycle could initiate us down the road to recovery precisely as last year’s election put us on this regrettable path.

There are numerous residents marching in public spaces throughout communities, similar to recent last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is stirring”, just as it did post-McCarthyism during the fifties or during anti-war demonstrations or in the Watergate scandal.

In those instances, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he understands the signals of that awakening and sees it happening currently. As evidence, he cites the widespread marches, the extensive, bipartisan pushback to a personality's dismissal and the largely united refusal by journalists to sign military mandates they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant consistently stays asleep till some venality grows too toxic, some action so disrespectful toward public welfare, some brutality so noisy, that he is forced except to rise.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will be validated.

At the same time, the big questions persist: is the US able to ever recover? Is it possible to restore its standing internationally and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts indicates that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be finished. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, advises me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.

For me, as a media critic, that’s about urging journalists to adhere, more completely, to their mission of holding power to account. For some people, it might involve working on congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to defend voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we existed in a very different place. In the future? Or in several years? The fact is, we cannot predict. The only option is to strive to not give up.

What’s Giving Me Optimism Currently

The engagement I experience in the classroom with young journalists, who are both idealistic and realistic, {always
