SNAP Payments Expected to End for 41 Million During Continuing Government Closure

The United States Department of Agriculture stated this past weekend that monthly food benefits from a major federal support systems are not going out in November amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks

The government shutdown had reached three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed demands from hundreds of House Democrats urging the USDA to access contingency funds to cover next month's benefits.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.

Millions Affected

Tens of millions of people depend on these food benefits, as reported by official statistics. Various areas, such as one southwestern state, dependence on the program affects a significant portion of citizens.

A memo obtained by a major news agency revealed that USDA officials chose not to tap reserve funds for the upcoming payments.

Legislative Deadlock

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree over how to finance and restart the federal government.

Remarks from the director at a prominent policy organization suggested that the White House had opportunities to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.

“They had the ability and responsibility acted earlier to get ready to access these resources,” the statement continued. “Instead, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for legislation that would resume federal functions.

States Prepare

State leaders from multiple regions issued emergency declarations this week to make money available to combat potential hunger expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
