Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Support After PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was natural for doubts to be asked about his future after a further heavy defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth loss in 12 matches, marking the club's poorest run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie title holders on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received significant backing from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to turn it around and get a victory naturally but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the club's leadership, the head coach revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and for me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me constantly each day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “Through standard exchanges I perceive the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Persistent Problems and Player Response
The manager expressed regret over familiar shortcomings from his squad in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't have to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry internally. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's tough because I play for the side I follow. I support them, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Reds side going through a phase like this with performances so bad.”
Jones concluded, “But we still have that badge on our shirts. And until it is gone, we will always fight.”
“Our aim is to help the side return to the top, show everyone once more what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the top club in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
