Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments after Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
