An extensive manufacturing zone located in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear pollution following a government taskforce detected traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities inside the area, which encompasses businesses that export frozen seafood.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

The country's officials initiated an investigation after the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of chilled breaded shrimp exported by a local company.

The FDA issued an warning advising suppliers and sellers to discard the product and not sell it, even though the detected amount was far below the agency's action limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not present an immediate risk to the public.

The authority stated: “The primary impact on health of concern after longer term, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through eating of polluted food or liquid over time) is an increased risk of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Medical Checks

Radiation scans showed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing zone were affected. The Indonesian team did not identify the twenty-one other production facilities, but confirmed they would promptly receive cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

A senior official declared that people living in highly contaminated areas would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health authorities additionally performed examinations on local employees and residents living near the manufacturing zone, finding 9 people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The contaminated sites will immediately undergo decontamination operations by the national atomic energy agency. Officials have further selected the site of a recycled metal factory as an isolation facility for contaminated goods.
