Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.
The Oscar-nominated actor Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
This actor, whose credits featured National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. The news was shared via an announcement shared by her daughter, Oscar-winning actor her daughter Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who appeared with her mom in a number of films including Wild at Heart, described her as “my amazing hero plus my special gift of a mother”, writing that she was by her side during her final moments.
“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist and caring individual that felt like a dream come true,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Beginnings and Breakthrough
Ladd’s early career included minor parts in TV shows including Gunsmoke while that decade had her appearing alongside actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.
During that year, the year 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance landed Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.
1980s and Beyond
In the 1980s, she starred in the dramatic film Black Widow plus humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a sitcom inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the following decade, she received another supporting actress nomination for her part in Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her actual daughter Laura Dern’s role. The following year she obtained an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose, another movie that also featured Laura Dern.
“This was the picture that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she flew us to the UK for a premiere and an event for us,” Ladd said of Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”
The nineties also saw roles in humorous films Cemetery Club, a film bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a satirical film, with John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she played Dern’s mother once more. Those years also brought her TV award nominations for performances in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
Collaborations with Daughter
She continued to star with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Subsequent TV appearances included the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.
Behind the Camera
Ladd also wrote and directed the humorous movie Mrs Munck featuring her and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. Actually, I am the sole female ever to helm a film with her ex. I humorously say: ‘I advise females, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”
Family Ties
Ladd was also a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact on my life”.
Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and told she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely once her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
“Should you harness your suffering and not let it back up similar to a wound, instead use it to investigate, to illuminate the way for personal and collective growth, then you are winning,” Ladd remarked.
